Concepts: New & Old

To the right is a silk shawl, handpainted with natural dyes, and woven in an unblocked 5 shaft damask structure. It was recently juried into an exhibit at the Brunnier Art Museum (Ames, IA) in conjunction with Colour Congress 2002.

Hot & Cold Confetti

pique graphicThis fabric is pique, a double cloth structure using two warps and 3 wefts. The fabric was made into a jacket which was juried into the ITAA Design Exhibit held at the Knoxville, TN Art Museum in 1997. It was exhibited by invitation at the Certificate of Excellence Exhibit at Convergence 2002, held in Vancouver, BC.

Indigo A GoGo

The solid blue stripes are 20/2 silk dipped three times in an indigo vat. The mixed colored stripesindigo scarf graphic used up the silk stash, was resist tied, dipped in the indigo vat once, and then warp painted with yellow wash fast acid dye. The networked 3/1 twill structure combined with an overtwisted weft causes the mixed stripes to collapse. Care was taken during weaving to avoid collapse in the solid blue stripes and on the selvages by threading them as rep weave on additional shafts.

Artist's Statement

Weaving satisfies my needs for creativity, scholarly pursuits, and diversion from work activities. Weaving can be simple or it can be very complex. It requires knowledge and skills in several areas including mathematics, design, and art. Curiosity about history and cultural and ethnic differences adds to one's ability to enjoy a variety of weave structures and color interactions.
